The Championship game took place at 4:30 against the Elmvale Coyotes who wanted a another shot at us after we beat them 4-2 on Friday. Both teams wanted that win and it showed when cool heads prevailed and there were a lot less penalties in this game with only 3 each per team.
Landon Brumwell scored on a power play with 10:45 to go in the first and we are up 1-0 (Sorry no assists noted). For the next half hour or so, we watched the Kawartha Coyotes play the best hockey game ever, in my humble opinion. Their power kills were amazing and they stole the puck more times than I can count. Sully had several amazing saves and held them off until they pulled their goalie and with the extra attacker they scored to tie the game with 19 seconds left in the game. This game will be going into overtime! So many emotions and thoughts running through our minds right now. We know this is the last game that this group of boys are going to play together. We know that this is the last game that Dave, Jay, Rod and Jeff will coach together. We know that this is the last time that we moms and loved ones will get to sit together and cheer our boys on from the stands. We want this so badly for them and they deserve it because they outplayed the other team. With poetic justice and with 31 seconds into the overtime period, all their hard work pays off, when Clark Gutoskie scores with a beauty, hard shot from his knee. The Kawartha Coyotes become OMHA CHAMPIONS and get to wear those red hats that they wanted so badly. Sully Vaughan gets Kawartha player of the game. Coach Jeff said it best when he said "something magical" was happening with the team over the weekend. It was meant to happen and it was the best possible ending to a fabulous hockey season.
